The 49th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) (Hertfordshire) Regiment of Foot was a line infantry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1743. From 1802 to 1814, the 49th served in Canada, where it was engaged in frontier warfare with the Americans, fighting bravely and with distinction throughout of the War of 1812. One of its finest actions was at Queenstown in October of 1812, which involved the tragic loss of General Sir Isaac Brock. Commonly referred to as “The Green Tigers”, after the regiment’s green facing and their ferocity in battle, the 49th was awarded the battle honour for Queenston Heights in 1816.

This button comes backed onto a postcard featuring artwork by artist J.C.H. (John Clifton Henry) Forster (1910–1993) from the City of Toronto Museums Collections.
